Great list. I wish I had an older sister to guide me like this!
Question though is how old is your brother? A lot of this is timeless advice but I think guys reach an age when worn-out Reebok Workout Plus is going to make you look a little a little less carefree taking the dog for a walk, and more shabby and probably not dating material.
Secondly you make a very fair point as my brother is 20 ish. But if he were older and wanting something a little more polished / to impress without feeling out of character, I would maybe suggest a clean converse Chuck 70s in the off white or black. Or a new balance 990v3 (if you can hunt them down), new balance 992/993. Or a preferred Paraboot/Kleman/Dr Marten. EDIT: adding in the Clarks Wallabees here because i think well kept suede is a good bridge between cool and clean. Also a nice change from trainers and speaks a lot to your personal style if you can make that shoe work.
And then just keep them clean and well stored as opposed to kicked off onto opposite sides of the floor as I’m sure my brother currently does to his shoes.
These all depend on how you’re styling and what you actually like to wear of course. But thank you for your comment and for reading!
Perhaps this substack needs some further chapters to cover more bases. Will have a think. :)
Loved this. If you could help by teaching us nits how to now find these pieces I’d be grateful. Like Newmans short v-neck. Short length, quality t-shirts. Google is a mass of long ugly sweaters and tees.
Thanks so much for reading! Glad you enjoyed it. This is a good point so I’ll make a note to find some options. It might be something I bring to the Substack chat so others can input too so keep an eye out there.
In the meantime I just posted a substack (The Dress Code 002) that has some menswear keyword searches and brands that could be helpful for finding specific stuff online? Might not be what you’re looking for but just a suggestion. :)

First of all, thank you!!

When I saw this for fist time I thought: very cool outfits. But when I looked for something similar for myself I was disappointed, it doesn’t fit me.
I remained myself this quote „style is character”.
So for me these photos are more about characters, nostalgia and vibes presented by these men rather then outfits recommendations.
Anyway good work it was nice to see this.
This essay started very strong with the first footnote. As a younger brother I feel offended :)
This made me laugh. Thank you for reading and sorry for potentially brutal honesty as an older sister 😂
This is an impeccable round up. I need to know if your brother read it and what he thought 😂
Thanks so much!! He did read it and loved it thank goodness. Whether he now applies any of it to his wardrobe is a whole other matter 😂
Thank you for your service. Sending this to my brother straight away!!
So happy to be of assistance. Thank you for reading 🫶
