Not the entire point of the article but there is still a dean & deluca store in Kyoto - I imagine it licensed or bought the name but it is very on brand with what the NYC one was. When I found it I had a field day & bought so much random sh*t because I missed the OG so much.
Oh my goodness I didn’t know that! This is noted. Now just got to get to Kyoto. I would definitely be buying all the random stuff too. And thanks so much for reading 🫶
Goodness the nostalgia I felt reading this! Popping into the D&D on Madison after roaming around the Guggenheim or the MET on any given Saturday was always my favorite. Something about that location just felt sacred and I haven’t found a place like it since. Thank you for reminding me of that feeling you could only get from D&D. 🤍
Loved it, thanks. Memories of old times. Well written and very evocative. Can see it all again as if it were yesterday.
D&D was a must-do every time we were in NY, both from a professional point of view—they were the very first design food store concept globally—and as a coffee lover. I can assure you that coffee in the mid eighties in NY was absolute rubbish!
Broadway has always been the only true D&D store for me. All the rest were poor substitutes that were needed to bring in cash and pay back debt. It's what happens everywhere when passionate founders sell out to investors.
But I'm an old bugger reminiscing. Was it better then? Unsure. But it definitely was more authentic and intimate. Being in the know then meant that you had been there, felt it, tasted it. Physically, not by scrolling on Instagram.
And yes, I once did order cappuccinos alongside Gwyneth Paltrow. My wife told me. I had no clue who on earth the woman was. But I remember she smelled nice.
Thank you so much for this comment! I love hearing the stories about it, including that Gwyneth Paltrow moment. Very cool. I’m glad you enjoyed reading this, it means a lot to me to have this comment attached to this piece.

Love this! D&D was one of my must sees when I first visited New York
Thanks for reading! So sad I won’t be able to visit it

You can't have that on Instagram...
