This is not a criterion collection type of list. Instead you’ll find a mixture of blockbuster feature film types, underrated and overlooked gems, and some older classics. I love them all equally for different reasons, which I intend to share, so please note that the order is not a ranking system. They’ve each played a part in developing my personal taste and aesthetic eye1 and this feels like as good a time as any to share that with you.

It’s likely you’ll recognise some of these. You may have even previously written some off as girly films. If so, you’re severely missing out. I will explain why. Just keep reading.

  1. The Thomas Crown Affair (1999 version)

dir. John McTiernan

This might be the sexiest film I’ve ever seen. I have to be honest with you, it reaches new heights of ridiculousness but it’s still so slick and suave at the same time. I secretly love a heist plot but especially one with such incredible style. There’s a 90s grain and colouring on these visuals that elevates its coolness.

When I’m looking at films like this I’m often thinking about how it could be recreated in photography. Or how great it would be to see film references like this make their way into fashion editorials and experiences. These are thoughts I end up pouring into my own projects, wardrobe and research so my point of view keeps developing.

Notable things worth really seeing2: the costume design in this is so good across both mens and womenswear. There are numerous suits and shirts, lots of expensive displays of timekeeping, stiletto-strutting, and incredible coats. The detail of each room we get to see in Pierce Brosnan’s not-so-humble abode.

  1. Intolerable Cruelty (2003)

dir. The Coen Brothers

A Coen Brothers film is never going to be predictable so sometimes it gets strange. But if it means we get shots like these then I’m okay with that. This film has so much potential for screenshotted stills that I once watched it over the course of three hours just to save my favourite frames. It’s subtle in its sultriness with added eccentricity and an intriguing plot to keep up with or you’ll miss it.

Notable things worth really seeing: all of Catherine Zeta Jones’ character wardrobe. I need a white pencil skirt suit with a cinched waist immediately. There are a lot of face close ups which make for great beauty inspiration if you’re into makeup. Lamps and tables and small slices of decoration that make up each interior space are très chic throughout. There is such a satisfyingly smooth warmth and contrast to the colour grading that I, again, consider when thinking about how to make photos feel like film.
